5 Fantastic Foods for Getting Back on Track!
by Hungry Girl, Yahoo.com
So what if January 1st has come and gone, and you’ve yet to make good on that New Year’s resolution? No time like the present, people! Here are five foods to get your diet back on track, courtesy of Hungry Girl…
Low-Fat or Fat-Free Yogurt
Yogurt is an AMAZING multi-purpose food item that deserves a spot in your fridge. You can eat it straight (of course) or layer it with fruit and cereal to make fun parfaits. You can use plain nonfat Greek yogurt as a sour cream swap. And the dessert-inspired flavors out there can help you avoid fattening sweets. Let yogurt into your life!
Light Vanilla Soymilk
All those amazing (and caloric) coffee drinks continue to tempt us. Here’s a tip: Keep yourself away from the local coffee shop; there are way too many high-calorie beverages and fatty treats. Light vanilla soymilk is a TERRIFIC ingredient for boosting the flavor of your at-home coffee with minimal effort. It’s also a great for making DIY smoothies — just blend with some frozen unsweetened fruit and a handful of ice.
Lean Ground Turkey
If you’re trying to get back on the rails after an indulgent holiday season (trust us; we get it), make sure lean protein is a part of the process. Lean ground turkey is great; sub it in anywhere you would use ground beef. And while extra-lean ground turkey is lower in fat and calories, it’s pretty dry and lacks flavor. The lean kind is worth the slightly higher stats. Make meat sauces, burger patties, meatloaf… whatever!
100-Calorie Flat Sandwich Rolls
Bread can be a HUGE source of extra calories, so if you’re trying to be extra-vigilant, these slim buns are a great option. You can even get a little nutty with ‘em — make French toast, using strategic ingredients like fat-free egg substitute and sugar-free pancake syrup. Many brands make these things, so find some and stock up!
Fruits & Veggies
Yes, we know, DUH. But we could all use the reminder. Don’t go looking for quick fixes and tricks without accepting that fruit and veggies are GREAT for you and you should eat a ton of the fresh stuff. If you always end up with a fridge full of rotten produce, stock up on the frozen versions — they’re still full of nutrients and last a lot longer. Just make sure that frozen fruit is free of added sugar!
