Stepping Strong!

Commendation from the City of San Jose

Lifelong Fitness worked with the San Jose office on Aging to support them in implementing a 10 week walking program, which was sponsored by the AARP and the National Parks and Recreation Association. The program culminated with a celebration for the participants (about 300), along with Gary Okazaki, head of SJ Parks and Recreation and SJ Council person, Judy Chirco. Lifelong Fitness Alliance received a Certificate of Commendation from the City of San Jose.

Stepping Strong!

Lifelong Fitness Alliance and Avenidas in collaboration with the Stanford Health Improvement Program's Stepping Out have started a ten week program to encourage individuals and communities to "step up" their overall wellness through information, encouragement, goal-setting and incentives. Additionally, the Stepping Strong! programs in conjunction with AARP are starting on an ongoing basis in various locations. If you are interested in joining the programs please contact our office at (650) 361-8282 and we will notify you with the starting dates and locations in your area.

Each group has an Ambassador who is the liaison between the sponsoring groups and their own group of walkers. The Ambassador is responsible for distributing and collecting information and ensuring proper tracking. Participants have signed a commitment form/waiver to be turned in by the launch party or by the start of the program. Participants were also be given a pedometer, instructions and tips on successful participation. There is information covered on all aspects of healthy living given through the weeks.

Participant Assessment from Pilot Program

  • 100% reported the program as "beneficial"
  • 100% would "recommend it to a friend"
  • 40% experienced desired weight loss (6-45 lbs)
  • Several participants reported stability of blood pressure and ability to reduce medication
  • 95% of participants reported increased physical activity
  • One participant reported increasing his ability to walk from 100 yards to 10 miles
